Moist zein animal fodder compsn. - contains a propionate to aid storability and prevent certain diseases (in ruminants)

Moist zein contg. 2-4% (pref. 3%) of an alkali(ne earth) propionate, esp. Na or Ca propionate, is used as a fodder material. The compsn. avoids the expense involved in drying the zein and inclusion of the propionate, in the quantities indicated, is physiologically advantageous for ruminants (e.g. for preventing acetonaemia or ketosis in cattle) andaids storability of the fodder. The zein can contain =60% water and is storable for =6 months at normal temps. which deterioration or fungal growth.
