Device for measuring the wall-thickness of refractory brickwork in metallurgical furnaces, esp. arc furnaces for mfg. steel, the novelty being that a bar is inserted in the brickwork so that its front end is flush with the surface of the lining in the furnace, while the other end of the bar projects outise the furnace and is fitted with a transducer for the transmission and reception of ultrasonic waves, the transducer being connected to an ultrasonic generator and used to establish the running time of the waves in the bar, and the homogeneous bar undergoes no transformation in the entire temp. range in which it is used. The bar is pref. made of amorphous, fused quartz. Reliable information is obtd. w.r.t. lining wear, using the echo technique, the end of the bar wearing at the same rate at the surface of the lining.
