The excitation winding is provided on the inductor (primary part) in addition to the polyphase a.c. winding mounted in the lamination pack of the inductor. The secondary system comprises massive magnetic sections (reaction teeth) and nonmagnetic sections. The distance between centres of the magnetic sections is equal to twice the pole pitch of the polyphase a.c. inductor winding. An additional, d.c. excited yoke is provided at the lamination pack front end. The air-gap (11) of the yoke (8) is variable, decreasing from a maximum at the side furthest from the inductor (3) lamination pack (4) to the normal machine air-gap (12).
