2-(2-Benzimidazolyl)-propionic acid - prepd by reacting succinic acid with 1,2- phenylenediamine

2-(2-Benzimidazolyl)-propionic acid (I), as crystalline form and as Na, K or HCl and other salts, may be prepd. by reacting succinic acid with 1,2-phenylenediamine at reflux temp. in 4-N acid, the required product being obtained in crystalline form after standing. (I) has a stimulant effect on the reticuloendothelial system and affords non-specific immunity to bacterial infections. Thus, administration of (I) in a dosage of 0.1 mg/Kg i.p. in mice affords 27% protection against mortality due to Staphylococcus aureua (11/15 treated mice died within 10 days, 15/15 untreated controls died); 0.25 mg/Kg gave 80% protection against mortality.
