A roof support system for protecting a scraper conveyor at the working face, employs a number of roof supports mounted spaced apart along the conveyor, each having a lifting arm carrying the tilting horizontal support plate at the end, actuated by a hydraulic ram mounted between the arm and the sledge which rests on the ground and with a mechanism by which it it positioned alongside the conveyor, all the horizontal support plates forming a continuous protection. Between the spaced roof support units are diagonal hydraulic cylinders by means of which the units are moved sidways along the conveyor. These are actuated by a hydraulic control system so that during this movement, one side only of the actuator piston in one unit is under pressure while both sides of the actuator piston of the next piston are under pressure.
