The flowmeter element has holes at its opposite sides connected with each other by a bore in the element, so that an alternating fluid flow is generated in this bore, corresponding to alternate vortices breaking away. The frequency of this alternating fluid flow is a measure for the flow velocity and is itself measured by one or several pickups. The vortex (13, 14) generating element (2) has recoils (9, 10) caused by the sharp trailing edges (11, 12), extending over the whole element length behind its sides (3, 4) with the holes (5, 6) connected by channels (15, 16) to the vortical space behind the breaking-off edges.
