First the panel which is made of wood or plywood is printed with the outlines of a picture, using a varnish or other paint-repelling medium, then paint or etching fluid is applied in a single operation to the whole surface, leaving colour everywhere except on the printed outlines. If several colours are used, they are applied with a brush, sponge or spray, and the outlines are printed wide enough not to demand precaution in the painting; etching fluids require broad outlines to avoid destruction of the pattern. The paints and etching fluids used give rise to transparent colours, which do not hide the grain of the wood.
