Multi-stage stroke piston compressor, for high and very high pressure, with a cylinder housing, a stage piston within it, a drive device for the piston, and valve controlled connecting conduits between consecutive stages of the cylinder housing. The stage piston is moved by a drive unit on its longitudinal centre and is symmetrical to its longitudinal centre in an axial direction. Each of the stages on one side of the longitudinal centre are connected, with the exception of the end stage, with the next higher stages on the other side of the longitudinal centre, and this by means of connecting conduits.
