The bearer possesses a 'U' shaped cross section with outward facing flanges (2, 3) which are spot welded to a flat base (4) to form a box bearer. All four cross section corners on a common place are then provided with an incision with a width of 1mm. Alternatively the flanges only may be provided with a similar incision (W). In the event of a longitudinal overload, the bearer will develop corrugations in the region of the incisions to absorb the impact energy. This is due to buckling of the highly stressed region having the slits at the cornerS.
