The arrangement forms a closed-circuit thermal process to produce mechanical energy in a hydrostatic motor driving a pump. It comprises a heat exchanger, heater, cooler and pressure/flow control. The heat exchanger capacity is such that a temperature increase of only 10 deg.C is to be produced in the heater whilst the temperature drop commences at 20 deg.C or more above the critical pressure/temperature condition of the liquefied gas utilised. The working fluid may be Frigen 12, and the energy output may be further increased by compression of the fluid, whereby the volume ratio between motor and pump is 2 to 1 instead of 2.35 to 1.
