The electron beam energy detector, for particle accelerators (eg betatrons and linacs), measures the electron acceleration time and uses this as a basis for indicating the energy of the emerging beam. A first signal (9) is generated that characterises a given accelerating field distribution and the time between this signal and a signal received from a particle detector (7) at the accelerator output is measured by counting clock pulses (17). Fluctuations in the accelerating field are taken account of by a coil (36) in this field and coupled to the input of a voltage frequency converter that acts as the pulse generator.
