Auxiliary engine for compression ignition engine starting - allows at low temperatures independent use of normal starter

A small two stroke spark engine (9) included in the installation has its crankshaft coupled through an overrun drive (14) to the shaft of the starter motor (6), which has a conventional pinion (8) with inertia engagement to the starter ring (4) of the main compression igniton engine (1). Under favourable ambient conditions, the main engine is started by the normal starter motor (6), which may be electric or compressed air, and the over-run coupling (14) leaves the auxiliary engine stationary. Under severe cold conditions, the auxiliary engine is first started; when its speed is raised, the pinion (8) engaged to start the main engine. An alternative layout comprises a smaller auxiliary engine coupled axially to the conventional starter through a clutch.
