The sensor forms a small reception angle, and its axis in the reception direction can be made to converge with the first axis at different distances. When both axes intersect at the measured object, the angle between the two axes is a measure for the object distance. It comprises a light source (L) emitting a focussed light beam in the first axis (1) direction, and a motor (M) which automatically swings the sensor (S1) responding only to the light reflected from the object (3). The rotation speed of the sensor is co-ordinated with the incident light pulse frequency.
