The mechanically operated umbrella or awning includes spokes (25) which are hinged to the top end of a lift pipe (2) displaceably mounted in a stand pipe (1) and are provided with known longitudinally displaceable end members and an angled holder (29) wherein peripheral cables (30, 31) run from holder to holder. The rib spokes have a predefined curved path so that in the closed state the ends of the spokes lie close to the stand pipe and the spokes can house the drive mechanism for the displacement mechanism between the umbrella cover and the stand pipe. The longitudinal displaceable end parts (25) of the spokes can be displaced and locked by means of a threaded rod (27). The umbrella can be opened and closed within its own dimensions.
