High strength, frost resistant bottoming and ballast - obtd. by granulating waste ash and mixing with binders

The load carrying ability and frost resistance of bulk materials contg. coal-ash or refuse-ash, for roads or other bottomings and ballast is improved by a process in which, on leaving the combustion zone, the ash is granulated by water-quenching, and an alkali, e.g. milk of lime, can be added to improve granulation, large iron and other metal particles also being removed in this stage. The pores of the granulate are sealed by mixing with natural or synthetic polymers e.g. calcium lignosulphate or waste sulphite lye, or a natural or synthetic adhesive resin, or other non-hydraulic binder, e.g. obtd. from crude oil distn., and water-repellent substances may also be added together with other waste products. The mixt. is compacted using conventional devices and vibration or rolling.
