The underside of the superstructure (3), generally located above the design waterline, has a tapered, wedge-shaped forward section (4, 5) with openings (6) whereby water can enter special tanks (7), from which it can leave again through further openings (8) in the top before discharging over the side of the ship via special channels (11) and scuppers (12). By letting it follow this path, the impact energy of the water is absorbed progressively and relatively gently. Baffles (10) suitably located in the tanks (7) are used to increase their effectiveness; perforated plate can be used for these and for the tank bottom plates.
