Contamination of the atmosphere by malodorous substances volatilised during the concentration of the spent lye from the prodn. of cellulose by alkaline boiling can be diminished by directly contacting the lye with the combustion gases from the boiler and then oxidising the malodorous substances. This method is improved by contacting the lye with a minor part of the combustion gases before the final concentration, and oxidising the malodorous substances with oxygen-contg. gases. The gaseous effluents contg. malodorous substances are pref. directed to the boiler and oxidised there by introduction of O2-contg. gases. This method is reliable and inexpensive.
