Switchgear cabinet with metal casing around busbar ends - to provide burn-out regions for arc travelling through compartments

The switchgear cabinet has several adjacent areas separated by partitions. Polyphase busbars pass through openings in these enclosed partitions. Instead of inter partition closure to limit arc travel, metal cases (5) are located at both end areas at the height of the bushbars (4). These cases enclose the ends of the buses and have pressure release valves (7) in case of short circuiting. These valves may be simple hinged flaps in the tops of the cases. Any arc generated between the busbars travels along through all the cells (without damaging any of them) and into one of the end cases, where it burns until quenched.
