Sulphoxides with antithrombotic and hypolipaemic activity - esp 1-(substd biphenylyl) ethylsulphinyl acetic acids and derivs

Sulphoxides of formula (I), including their diastereoisomers and optically active antipodes are new: (R1 and R2 = H, halo, CH3, CH3O, CH3S, NO2 or CN; R5 = H, COOH, 2-7C carbalkoxy, CONH2 (opt. substd. by 1 or 2 1-3C alkyl), morpholinocarbonyl, piperidinocarbonyl, thiomorpholinocarbonyl or 1-oxido-thiomorpholinocarbonyl; A = CH2 opt. substd. by CH3 or CH2OH; n = 0 or 1). They are prepd. e.g. by oxidising the corresp. thioethers. (I) have antithrombotic activity; reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels and increase bleeding time. For adults unit doses are 1-100, esp. 10-50 mg. and the daily dose 100-200 mg.
