The engine, generally as in 2214875 has 3 axial seals (11, 11, 12) whose mating surfaces are spherical and all concentric, so that slight rocking of the pistons (2, 3) and/or shaft (1) will not affect sealing. Piston bearings (a1, a2, b1, b2) are designed for even wear relative to the centre (M), minimising its displacement and thus the effect of wear on sealing. A split bearing ring (18) over the spherical collar on the shaft in line with the centre (M) acts as a steady and further reduces wear. Chamfered edges to the axial seal surfaces promote entrainment of lubricant; sealing of pistons in the cylinder is improved; additional piston cooling passages are provided.
