Mine heading support system is put into effect by splaying out the support frame components in two directions chosen at will within the plane containing the support frame when erected. This produces an adjustable force such that the stress condition resulting in the rock becomes its permanent state once the frame components have been set and secured in this splayed position. Splaying should be effected by means of a hydraulic cylinder (13) acting on the frame components (eg arches 1, 2, 3) through pressure members (3, 4, 8) hydraulically or mechanically coupled to the cylinder and making contact with the arches as and where required. Preferably the floor pressure bar (7) carries a base (19) for an eccentric pivotal lever (12) whose one arm supports the hydraulic cylinder (13) thrusting against the roof member. The far end of the lever should be coupled by a bar (14) to a corner of the toggle (15) pivoted through rocker (17) on the base. A second bar (16) should link the other toggle corner (15) to a second rocker (16), the rockers contacting the arch pressure members (8) at the sides of the heading.
