The cutting tool is mounted on a tool holder which can rock to and fro about the shaft on which it is mounted. The shaft itself is mounted in a second rocking part and carries a cam which engages with a fixed surface, so that while the cutting tool is moved to and from the workpiece, it is also moved up and down. The radial distance from the point of contact of the cutter with the workpiece to the centreline of the workpiece will therefore be varied over a fixed cycle. Alternatively, the cutter mount is being moved to and fro.
