The housing of a multi-stage opening and cleaning machine for fibres to be spun, esp. cotton; the machine having inside its housing, a series of rotary beaters arranged horizontally one behind the other in ascending line, working with gratings beneath which there is a waste compartment; and guide plates in the zones of the beaters; as well as, on the housing a feed hopper in front of the first, and a delivery cowl behind the last rotary beater; has, above the working zone of the rotary beaters limited by guide plates, an open zone, the height of which above the beaters, is equal to the height of the beaters themselves, and an extraction connection fitted in the upper zone at the front. When the arrangement of the beaters rises obliquely, the top cover of the housing runs horizontally at the height of the housing cover above the last beater. The fibre is opened and cleaned sufficiently to suit the exacting requirements of rotor spinning, and makes it unnecessary to effect a further dust removing operation such as vacuum dust extraction behind the multi-stage opener.
