A slitting arrangement behind the take up motion of a loom, for cutting the piece longitudinally into strips for labels, etc. has a cross member positioned some distance from and parallel to the line of motion of the piece, and reciprocated by a driving mechanism. The cross member both pivots on its long axis and moves axially as required across the width of the fabric. Heatable blades spaced out relatively to each other are arranged on the cross member, and each cutter has a double sided edge smoothing plate. Appts. cuts the labels leaving them with neat and clean edges.
