Sepn. of edible paraffin wax mixts. into (A) a mixt. of n-and ios-paraffins and naphthenes contg. 20-32C and (B) high melting n-paraffins comprises (1) treating the mixt. at 42-45 degrees C with urea in wt. ratio 1:1 in presence of a solvent mixt. of 60 vol.% petrol and 40% acetone, with paraffin/solvent ratio 1:3-3.5 (2) sepg. the crystalline urea adduct of (B) from the soln. of (A) (3) washing the soln. of (A) with water at 80-90 degrees C, and distilling off the solvent and water, (4) treating the adduct with water at 80-90 degrees C, sepg. the ag. urea soln. and distilling off solvent from the soln. of (B). (A) is used as an additive for protective coatings on metal sheet used for making preserving cars for food. (B) is a valuable raw material for making higher alcohols and synthetic fatty acids, and in the foodstuffs industry for mfr. of packaging and cheese. (A) is compatible with coatings and imparts elasticity and high adhesion to the metal. Corrosion protection or prolonged storage is improved even in contact with crab products. (B) contains no carcinogens and is odourless.
