Coil for electro magnetic brake - has cap in mounting so that coil thermal expansion does not affect air gap

The brake housing (1) is provided with a recess (2) into which the coil (3) and spool n4) are fitted. A channel section ring (6) is fitted over the coil (3) into a slightly wider recess (5), and abuts against the shoulder at the bottom of the recess (5) to leave a gap (7) between the inner face of the channel section and the end face of the spool (4). The outer face of the channel section (6) carries the brake lining (8) which is secured by adhesive. When the coil (3) is energised, the expansion due to the rise in temp can be accommodated by the gap (7) without affecting the air gap between the housing (1) and brake disc (9).
