The first pulse brings a control circuit into a first state and the second pulse returns the control circuit to a second state, with the control circuit acting with a reference frequency circuit, such that in the first state of the control circuit the reference pulses are supplied to a counter. For measuring the time between the two pulses, the control circuit comprises a two-stage buffer register, the data input of which is connected to a DC source and the clock input receiving the consecutive 'start' and 'stop' pulses, so that the register switches state in response to the leading or rear edge of the latter pulses. Both stages of the register have an output connected to the reference frequency circuit, pref. comprising a gating circuit with a third input receiving the reference pulses.
