The sonar apparatus can be immersed into water and lifted out of a support and signal carrying cable. A number of identical hydrophone holders are connected on the outside of the housing part, suspended from the cable, via connecting elements formed by parallelogram linkages. A driving mechanism operates the extension of the hydrophone holders from the housing and their retraction, during which the upper part of each holder is kept parallel to its mounting on the housing part. The holders lower part is connected to the driving mechanism in such manner as to be rotatable through 180 deg. during extended linkage. Each holder mounts at least one hydrophone. Projection elements are mounted in the housing part and cooperate with the unlatching mechanism of the holders.
