Self-starting single-phase synchronous motor - is made self-starting by specifying ratio of mechanical start time constant and quarter period of drive volts
The self-starting single phase synchronous motor is made self-starting by setting the ratio of the mechanical starting time constant and one quarter of the drive voltage period equal to a figure lying between 0.4 and 1.2. The mechanical starting time constant is equal to the kinetic energy at synchronous rotation divided by the apparent power of the motor. The expression for the kinetic energy involves only the supply frequency and the movement of inertia at starting the appararent power is given by the product of the effective voltage induced during synchronous rotation and the effective short circuit current.
