The free ends of the weft insertion needles are shaped as forked hooks, while the weft guides are moved under programme control to posn. the weft yarns in the path of the needle ends. The system doubles the prodn. speed of a needle loom, with the weft yarns being inserted selectively alternately across the weaving zone, being laid in parallel in the areas where the buttonholes are to be developed.
