The waste opening (20) is set above a waste container (18) directly adjacent the front edge of the draining board (10) so that any waste residue left behind in the sink can be easily scooped up and over into the waste container (18). The sink unit and draining board are designed with a moulded bead or protrusion (21) which surrounds the waste opening (20) and allows a lid (22) to be fitted to close off the opening (20). This lid (22) can be designed to be completely removable from the opening or can be fixed to swivel about an axis which preferably runs in the longitudinal direction of the front edge of the draining board (10). The lid can also be designed to act as a chopping board or work surface, and in the closed position preferably protrudes slightly beyond the sink.
