An optical character recognition is based upon characters formed from a number of basic geometric shapes. The optical scanning sensors enable each of the basic shapes to be detected and application of a standardised routine enables the constructed character to be identified. The character (H) is formed by two basic rectangular profiles of dark intensity (LEa, LEb) and two rectangular profiles of light intensity represented on a scanning matrix (ZF). The output of the sensings are transmitted to shift registers for the vertical and horizontal locations of the basic shapes. The interpreting circuitry enables a centring of the characters and also permits compression of the scaling factor.
