Organotin trihalides are prepared by reacting in a polar solvent a stannous halide, hydrogen halide and an olefin of the formula IMAGE where R1, R2, R3, and R4 are an alkyl group, an oxygen-containing hydrocarbon group or a hydrogen atom and at least one of the groups contains a carbonyl group adjacent to the carbon-carbon double bond. The resulting product may be converted into organotin stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride and other polymers.
