Operation of horizontal coke oven batteries equipped with rising gas outlet pipes near the chamber ends, attached to collector mains through pipes containing water sprinklers, with the coking period divided into 3 sections in which the chamber is (1) first connected only to one collector main, through a sprinkler system, (2) then also connected to an auxiliary main without passing through a sprinkler, and finally (3) only connected to the auxiliary main with the sprinkler operating. Cooled gas flow is provided from one end of the chamber to the other, through the gas collecting space over the coal, which prevent excessive temp. and avoids coating the roof of the chamber with graphite deposits. Conditions can be varied to match the grade of coal being processed.
