1522798 Tamperproof seals AVON MEDICALS Ltd 10 Nov 1975 [18 Nov 1974] 49836/74 Heading B8T A tamperproof seal for an access opening, e.g. in a blood bag, includes a first tamperproof seal denying access until it has been destroyed and a second access-denying means to re-seal the opening made available on the destruction of the first seal, the second access-denying means being arranged to indicate disturbance from its sealing position. The seal comprises a tubular portion 5 attached by a weakened portion 8 to a block 9 integral with a strap 13 having a ring 14 at its extreme end and also an aperture part-way along its length. The second access-denying means is in the form of a plug 3 attached to the block 9 by a stem 21 and stud 22 received in a complementary opening in the block. Assembly.-To assemble the seal, the strap 13 is turned over through 360 degrees so that the aperture part-way along its length engages the plug 3 and the ring 14 is passed under the tubular portion 5 and received on a rebated portion 6 of the portion 5. A tubular member 1 having an access passage 26 therein, preferably closed by a puncturable diaphragm 4, is pushed into the tubular portion 5, leaving a larger diameter portion 24 between the end of the member 1 and a shoulder 7 of the portion 5. The assembly is then secured in an opening in a blood bag. In operation, a lift tab attached to the block 9 is pulled to rupture the weakened portion 8 to provide access to the passage 26. The act of rupturing the portion 8 causes the strap 13 to uncoil and the plug 3 is disengaged from the aperture in the strap. When it is desired to re-seal the passage 26, the plug 3, which is preferably frusto-conical, is pushed into the passage until it snaps behind the shoulder 7 with distortion of the portion 5. The force required to release the plug from the shoulder 7 is greater than that required to rupture the stem 21 or release the stem 21 and stud 22 from the block 9, thus providing an indication of attempted removal of the plug.
