The system is used for the attachment of wall or ceiling claddings, by means of grooved shaped-section battens fixed to the wall or ceiling. These battens (6) have an undercut groove (13) on the side facing away from the wall or ceiling, for the insertion of retainers (14). These are fitted with lugs which firstly engage behind the groove, and secondly hold the cladding (8) in place. The retainer may be made of a strip of resilient material. The lugs lying in the groove may run transversely to a lug which holds the cladding in place. The lug lying in the groove may be shorter in length than the breadth of the groove. Production and installation are simplified.
