Cooling hot steel rod leaving a rolling mill - where cooling water flows in the same and opposite directions to the rod

Device for the cooling of unalloyed, medium- and high-alloy rolled wire or rod, esp. steel rod leaving the last stand in a rolling mill and travelling in a straight line comprises a row of several pairs of mirror-image cooling tubes connected by a collection chamber, the inlets and outlets for the coolant being provided with flow restriction elements and the nozzle head being surrounded by a chamber filled with coolant. The direct-current coolant tube and the counter-current coolant tube are surrounded by a common jacket. The pref. device includes a diffuser where the two coolant currents meet and a ring chamber contg. a ring sieve. Optimum use of cooling water and energy, gives improved the quality to the cooled steel products so that the amt. of alloying elements in the steels can be reduced.
