A convent, safe and speedily operated test bed is used for various types of internal combustion engine. The engine (1) is mounted on an adjustable structure consisting of cross connected struts (2, 3, 4) and the various attachments are then made by means of suitable mechanical linkages. The exhaust manifold (9) is attached to an exhaust pipe (12) by means of a gas tight link unit using a spring and bolt. Another joint is required for the cooling water supply system (29). In this case a water tight joint is ensured by the mating of two tubes which are held together by a threaded shroud.
