Heat exchanger employing cooling water esp sea water - eg for use in coastal power stations etc

A heat exchanger has inlet and outlet headers between which cooling pipes extend, an inlet and an outlet pipe connected into the respective headers and in which cooling water flows in sequence through the inlet pipe, inlet header, cooling pipes outlet header and outlet pipe. According to the novelty a cylindrical sieve is inserted into the inlet header with its one end connected to the inlet pipe and its other end connected to a by-pass pipe which in turn is connected to the outlet pipe. A means is provided for generating turbulent flow conditions inside sieve in order to dislodge foreign bodies collected by it and to flush them through the by-pass pipe. No chlorine injection is necessary, and algae, seaweed, shellfish etc. collected in the sieve can be removed whilst the heat exchanger remains on stream.
