Esters of ampicillin and cephalexin - readily absorbed when administered orally

Cpds. (I) (where A = Y = R2 of -CO2R3; R2 = lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, benzyl or lower acyloxyethyl; R3 = lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl or benzyl) and their acid addn. salts are prepd. by reacting with a Ph halide; reacting the resultant iminohalide with a lower alcohol to give an iminoether which is reacted with phenylglycyl chloride and the addn. cpd. treated with water or alcohol. I are converted to antibacterials in the body and are more readily absorbed when administered orally than ampicillin etc. itself.
