The column is subdivided by flat or conical etc. floors within which are a number of one way ports (capped stand pipes, syphons, non return valves) which only allow an upward movement of the feed stock as it ferments progressively, the product being extracted from the top of the column. Within each compartment a turbulent gas movement is maintained using externally fed gases which are inert w.r.t. the micro-organisms causing fermentation and/or the CO2 produced during fermentation part of the gases being recycled optionally as may be the yeast, fungi or bacteria used to promote fermentation. A higher grade prod is obtd.
