Lubricating agent for starch coatings for paper consists of (pts. wt.) (I) 30-90, esp. 40-60, first lubricating agent selected from stearates, oleates, laurates, palmitates and myristates of Ca, Zn, Al, Na, NH4, and Mg, (II) 10-70, esp. 40-60 second lubricating agent selected from deacidified tallow, neutralised tallow, hydrogenated tallow, alkylated tallow, paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, synthetic waxes, polyethylene glycols with a mol. wt. of 400-10,000 or their esters, satd. fatty alcohols and esters of fatty acids, (III) 1-160, esp. 60-100 water, (IV) 0.30, esp. 1-10 dispersing agent, and (V) 0-30, esp. 1-10 emulsifier, at least one of (IV) and (V) being present if (I) is insol. in water. Gives coated paper with a high gloss and resistance to powder formation.
