Crosslinking cellulosic fibres - by depositing solid polymer on fibres and heating to depolymerise and release crosslinkin

Cellulosic fibres are crosslinked by (a) depositing on the fibres a solid polymer which dissociates thermally to give a gaseous org. crosslinking agent for the fibres and (b) heating the fibres with the deposited polymer to a temp. sufficient to depolymerise in situ the polymer and form the crosslinking agent which crosslinks the fibres. Pref. the polymer is a polymer of a branched aldehyde, or is formed from vapours of a volatile org. ester. Used for prodn. of cellulosic fibres with permanent press and crease resist props. The treated fibres, which may be in the form of threads, fabrics or garments, have good physical propts. and the treatment can be effected rapidly.
