Mutant strain of p.freudenrichii ATCC 6207 is prepd. by treatment with mustard gas, antibiotics, and manganese salts and is designated RSA 248. It is fermented in the presence of Vit B12 precursors, an association of pantothenic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid and 5,6-dimethyl benzimidazole, the fermentation being effected anaerobically at 27-29 degrees C, then aerobically at 29-31 degrees C. The prod. is extracted by filtration of the cells and their aqs. extn., solvent extn. a second passage in the aq. phase, and finally crystallisation.
