Butt welding of the two ends of a tube of rubber or elastic plastics material is effected during the prodn. of inner tubes, by (1) placing the stretched tube piece, with the help of a support, in the U-shaped, open loop position, and (2) mechanically acting upon the tube piece so that, with only a relative displacement of the welding jaws and U-shaped tube piece, the ends of the tube piece are introduced into the adjoining open welding jaws, and the cowelded ends of the tube piece are released from the adjoining open weld jaws.
