1452982 Catalytic cartridge for purifying exhaust gas M BEHR [trading as SUDDEUTSCHE KUHLERFABRIK JULIUS FR BEHR] 15 Jan 1974 [20 Jan 1973] 01895/74 Heading B1F [Also in Division B3] A catalytic cartridge for purifying I.C. engine exhaust gas comprises atlternate smooth and corrugated steel alloy sheets coated with catalyst and either stacked to form a sandwich (Fig. 3, not shown), with all corrugations parallel, or wound spirally (Fig. 2). The outer edge of the wound two-ply sheet in Fig. 2 is cut obliquely at 24 so that the cartridge is compressed when forced axially into steel shell 4. Alternatively the shell could be frusto-conical. Resilient spokes 21 retain the cartridge in the shell and could be replaced by wire mesh. The cartridge and shell may be mounted in a housing using end rings (19) which are screwed or welded to the shell and housing (Fig. 4, not shown). Cartridges carrying different catalysts may be arranged in a common shell and housing with an intermediate air inlet (Fig. 5, not shown). Inlet/outlet pipes may be retained between rings (19) and shell 4 (Fig. 6, not shown), and insulation may fill the space between rings, shell and housing. The sheets may be coated with nickel oxide or copper oxide directly in a bath (Fig. 7, not shown) or coated with nickel or copper before assembly and then oxidised. Sheets may be welded or soldered together at points or over whole areas of contact. Sheets may be 0.1 mm. thick and define between them cells not more that 1.5 mm high or wide.
