Ortho-phenanthroline/quat. ammonium salts - mixtures for stabilising plexaura homomalla before extraction of prostanoic acids by aq. alcohol

Prepn and separation of prostanoic acid derivs, by adding to freshly collected colonies of Plexaura homomalla a mixt of equal parts of p-phenanthroline and a quaternary ammonium deriv, extracting the homogeneous mixt. with an aqs. alcohol and passing the extract through a molecular sieve. The phenanthroline/quaternary mixt. stops enzyme action and allows storage for several months of the collected colonies. The organism, found in the Caribbean area, may be extracted with rum which is plentiful in the locality. Suitable molecular sieves are Sephadex, XAD resins and Bio-gel P.
