Aromatic hydrocarbons and/or organic S cpds. are removed from their mixts. with more satd. hydrocarbons by (a) contacting the mixt. with an anhydrous macroporous cation - exchange resin in which the exchangeable cation is NH4+, N2H5+, R1NH3+, R1R2NH2+, R1R2R3NH+ or R1R2R3R4N+ (where R1 - R4 are opt. substd. hydrocarbyl) and (b) recovering the non-adsorbed hydrocarbons. Suitable feedstocks contain 0.05 - 20 wt.% aromatics and/or between 5 ppm and 3 wt. % of S cpds. The resin can be regenerated by (a) washing with a hydrocarbon that is easily sepd. from the adsorbed substances (pref. by distn.) or (b) purging with liq. or gaseous NH3.
