Benzofurans of formula (I): (where X is halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, OH, NO2, Y is -1-4C alkyl, aryl, Z is H, 1-4C alkyl R, R1 singly are 1-5C alkyl or R+R1 and the attached N-atom form a heterocyclic ring opt. contg. another heteroatom). and their acid-addn. salts are inhibitors of biosynthesis of uric acid, and have spasmolytic activity. They are used in treating gout.
