The surfaces are treated in general with liquid or gaseous medium or this medium is applied to the surfaces. Shoe soles are roughened and treated for ensuring better adhesion in the subsequent gluing process. The surface is treated under vacuum which is generated during or after the completion of the supply of the medium and no vapours escape outside the apparatus. Vacuum processing ensures also that the sprayed medium is distributed with greater uniformity over the surfaces. The vacuum system simultaneously removes any harmful vapours. The shoe sole which forms a dish with upturned edges is closed by a plate which contains the spraying nozzle and the opening to the vacuum pump. The shoe sole is closed by the plate and the spraying nozzle applies the treating medium, and the vapours are drawn away by a pipeline. The shoe soles are delivered automatically under the processing head by a continuous transporter chain.
